Paraty is a small town located between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, part of the Rio de Janeiro state. My husband and I visited Paraty in April 2012 during our 1 month backpacking travel through Brazil, for our honeymoon.
1. How did you hear about Paraty in the first place?
We had to switch buses between 2 of our destinations we had planned. On the way from Ilha Grande to Foz de Iguazu, initially it was just a stop over but ended up being one of my favourite places in Brazil.
2. For how long did you stay there?
Initially we just wanted to stay in Paraty for 1 night on our way from Ilha Grande to Foz do Iguazu but we ended up staying 2 whole days. I felt 2 days were just perfect, we had enough time to explore the little town and the surrounding nature and beaches.
3. How did you prepare your trip to Paraty?
We just planned everything on the go, we tried to bock hostels or guesthouses the day before when we had an internet connection somewhere. We usually traveled by bus and since Brazil is huge, I usually had several hours to read in my Brazil travel guide what there was to do in the place where we would go next.
4. Why did Paraty become so special to you?
I rarely have been to a small town with so much charme. The atmosphere at night in the historical part of the town is just amazing. And just a 30 min bus ride away you get to amazing places like beaches and for example a natural water slide. Even more amazing, you get those almost all to yourself.
5. Is there any hidden spot that you want to share with us?
Yes Yes Yes: the natural water slide, Cachoeira Toboga. You take the bus and get out after about 30min. Then you’re hiking up through the most beautiful jungle like forest and end up being rewarded with a natural water slide in the middle of the forest. There were only some local kids playing and we were the only tourists, we spent hours there sliding and exploring all around what there was to explore.
6. If you could come back but just go to a single place there… Which would you choose? And why?
I would definitely go back to that natural water slide, you get to have loads of fun completely for free with a beautiful landscape around you, all alone.
7. Can you leave us some special places for staying, eating or visiting at Paraty?
For the rest, Trinidade, a short bus ride from Paraty has amazing beaches with little mountains on them which you can climb and get an amazing view. We stayed in the Pousada Konquista which had a really cool atmosphere and awesome breakfast included.
