Croatia is my favourite Eastern European country and I decided this long before I started watching Game of Thrones. I visited twice, once on an impromptu road-trip with two strangers and the second time exactly two years ago for Easter, on a road-trip that led me and my friends from Berlin all the way to Krk Island. On our second trip there, we spent one night and one day at the Plitvice Lakes National Park and then drove through the mountains all the way to the Northern part of the coast.
1. How did you hear about Northern Croatia in the first place?
While a lot of people might choose Greece over Croatia when it comes to Eastern European summer destinations, I think Croatia is ideal exactly because it’s not so popular yet. That and the combination between mountain and seaside make it the ideal destination in my eyes.
2. For how long did you stay there?
Both times I stayed there for five days. Given that we spent a lot of time on the beach, I’d say five to seven days are pretty much enough to visit the whole area.
3. How did you prepare your trip to Croatia?
On our first trip we were extremely spontaneous, we had nothing booked and took care of everything when we got there (this turned out to be pretty easy as a lot of locals have rooms to rent in their houses, however, be aware that they mostly speak German and very little English). On our second trip, however, we had a car and accommodation booked.
4. Why did this place become so special to you?
Because of the people who are so warm and welcoming, the rocky beaches that I had never before experienced (I had always only witnessed sand beaches) and the greenest water I have ever seen.
5. Is there any hidden spot that you want to share with us?
A beautiful small private beach of Anda Villa Club Jardin where in order to get to you need to climb about 1000 steep stairs and walk through olive tree gardens but which is totally worth it.
6. If you could come back but just go to a single place there… Which would you choose? And why?
I would definitely go back to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, it is the most beautiful natural park I have ever been to and despite the 11km root through the hills and the pain in our backs the next day, it was more than worth it.
7. Can you leave us some special places for staying, eating or visiting at Northern Croatia?
Stay at: Anda Villa Club Jardin. We payed about 23€ a person per night and had breakfast delivered to our apartment door every morning (a basket full of warm bread and local delicacies). The hotel also has a swimming pool overlooking the sea for when it’s too cold to swim in the sea.

Best time to visit – I went there once in September and despite having a lot of sun, it was a bit too cold for bathing in the sea. The second time we went in April and it was still a bit too chilly for bathing so I’d say the ideal times to go would be May-September.
Best way to move – Rent a Motorbike
Cost – Between 20 and 30 € / day, everything included
